Designed by the highly acclaimed Werner van der Meulen, House Sar encapsulates luxury, comfort and functionality in a minimalist architectural settiing and it is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The clients approached Nico van der Meulen Architects with a modest single storey pitched roof house.
Limited views and access to the garden resulted in the rooms beings dark, and thus the clients main request was to transform this house into a light-filled open plan contemporary home. Ensuring that every room was naturally lit became the challenge for Werner van der Meulen, but one he proved could be done.
The designer Werner van der Meulen created a framework of steel columns and beams around the entrance with louvered planes sheltering the four garages and the floating roof. The tiled roof was replaced with a suspended cube that floats in mid air with glass areas bringing more light into the living room as well as into the guest bedroom.
The small atrium next to the kitchen illuminates this part of the home and the sliding glass doors permit the house to be naturally ventilated. The first floor contains a new study as a mezzanine that overlooks the garden and is connected through a steel staircase with the family area.
The master bedroom was designed as a private lounge area with ensuite bathroom and a large bed that area incorporating a steel louvered screen to protect the inhabitants from the garden views.
