This luxury residence, home to Hertz and his family, was designed in two phases. The first phase featured two separate volumes connected by a bridge. Some years later the adjacent lot became available. It is now a compound made up of four discrete two-story buildings linked by three enclosed bridges that all face onto the courtyard, in a style one might call Balinese Modern.

This home combines the concepts of “Interior/Exterior Living” that take into account human interaction and space & energy reduction. This is achieved through the integration of strategically placed outdoor rooms that create harmonious transitions from inside to out.

This 2,700 square foot single family residence draws upon the site and context for inspiration by referencing a specimen pine on site and reinterpreting two other trees removed as part of the construction process. The trunk diameter of the pine is nearly five feet and the canopy over sixty feet across, so it clearly serves as the most dominant feature of the site (and nearly the entire block). Since removal was not an option for the clients, the parti of the house was organized around the tree’s location on site; near the back and virtually in the middle. This organization maximized the livable square footage of the house while minimizing the risk of damage to the tree. In reality, the plan of the house is quite simple and if left untreated could resemble any number of stucco boxes in the area.

In 1989 Warren Wagner reworked an existing 1951 ranch house on this site and twenty-three years later W3 Architects were invited back by the current owners to reconceive the house for a family with three young children. The design intent was to expand the house for the functional requirements of a modern family while maintaining the character of the original building and restoring many of the elements created in the 1989 renovation. The house demonstrates a sustainable and intimately scaled green design approach that allows for the family’s continued enjoyment now and for future generations.
